Instances of the utilization of IS/IT for Gaining Competitive Advantage in Business There is an effective usage of IS innovation in the activities of various organizations. The case of ineffective usage of is as per the following: Hilton inns have executed a data framework that encourages clients to book and save rooms in an inn and request rental vehicle through an online mode so as to make the way toward booking and vehicle rentals simpler for the organization just as clients. The organization has actualized exchange handling framework (TPS) which encourages in assortment of the operational data of the exercises did in the inn. Hilton inn doesn't have enormous measure of tasks to be taken care of by the framework because of which it got troublesome and entangled for the business. Other than this, because of utilization of mix of equipment and programming to deal with monstrous amount of business and shopper information there is an event of security breaks. This is on the grounds that numerous private data of shoppers are put away and breaking down of the equipment, for example, electrical blackout that can bring about harm of the incorporated framework. Alongside this, there is likewise a need of specialized individuals with the end goal of support of the framework 24 hours per day so as to coordinate different divisions with the framework, for example, bookkeeping, stock, transportation and finance ((Avison Torkzadeh 2009, p.118). Other than this, swelling rate and GBP conversion scale has likewise a huge effect on the operational presentation of the organization (Cooke 2012). Word of the Week! Absurd Richmond Writing
Word of the Week! Absurd Richmond Writing Isnt it wonderful to have a day dedicated to playing jokes on each other? This post honors April Fools Day, a last vestige of festivals from Antiquity such as Saturnalia, where the social order turned upside down. I began my hunt for the right word by a simple Google search, to find a synonym for foolish. Then, looking at absurd, I thought how absurd the nonsense word google is, having no etymology I could imagine other than a now-forgotten, and rather foolish, cartoon character. Thinking about Google, as well as using it did, however, give us a word for a very special day.My go-to for the history of words, The OED Online, suggests a dual French and Latin parentage for our word, with absurde indicating something contrary to common sense. That 14th Century continued into English, with the OEDs examples dating back as far as the 1500s. In Hamlet, we have this: Fie, tis a fault to heauen, A fault against the dead, a fault to nature, To reason most absurd. Unless one is an Adsurdist artist, the absurd is, at best, done deliberately to have fun or make fun of others. Real fools, however, do not recognize their absurdity or even deliberately embark on foolhardy adventures. That sense of reason and absurdity being at odds stands today. That makes absurd anything but absurd in formal usage; so many terms drift but this one, like the fool who persists in foolishness, remains delightfully unchanged. Next week we have a faculty-nominated word from the sciences. It enshrines reason to counteract our foolish pursuits. For now, however, be a bit absurd as you play harmless tricks on friends and family. Update: This post troubled me because absurd does not seem to come from the word surd plus the ab affix. I found this list of words that employ ab in the sense of away from, as in abnormal. By coincidence, ab was the sites word root of the day. Nominate a word by e-mailing me (jessid -at- richmond -dot- edu) or leaving a comment below. See all of our Words of the Week here.

The Impacts of Boccaccios Writing Style on the Tone of...
Boccaccios Decameron is a masterpiece of early 14th century European literature; its bawdiness and its sheer wit are a wonderful, funny indicator of what life was like in 14th century Italy. However, the central framing device of the book itself - the Black Plague, which ravaged Europe around the time of the books setting and publication - plays a somber but vital role in this important work. The importance of the plague to the story is no less evident than in the introduction, which demonstrates the awesome power of the sickness. Boccaccios account of the plague during the time it hit Florence is often compared to real accounts and additional sources of information about the Black Plague, but it is often left wanting due to Boccaccios penchant for embellishment and dramatic flair. Furthermore, Boccaccios emphasis in the introduction of the Black Plague was often on the unstoppability and sheer terror of the disease, including how swiftly it spread throughout the country and peoples helplessness in treating it. Boccaccios writing style is very dramatic and humorous, with a particular emphasis on philosophy as it pertains to luck. The following analysis will weigh the introduction of the Decameron according to these criteria. Boccaccio starts the Decameron with an introduction that immediately demonstrates his artistic and dramatic flair - Every time I stop to consider your natural inclination to pity, most gracious ladies, I recognize that you will find the opening

Suggestibility and Human Memory Essay - 616 Words
Suggestibility in human memory is considered as the phenomenon called the misinformation effect. The misinformation effect occurs when the misleading information influence a personââ¬â¢s memory of the witnessed event and change how that person describes that event later. Moreover, the misleading information in this effect is referred to as misleading postevent information (MPI) (Goldstein, 2008). Loftus and her colleagues contribute a lot to the early studies of misinformation effect. In one of the classical misinformation experiments (Loftus, Miller, Burns, 1978), participants first saw a slide show of a car accident and one of the sildes depicted a car at a stop sign. Participants in the experimental group got the misleadingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Those participants who receive correct or neutral information in the intervening questions had much more accurate memories. This effect is highly related to real world life especially the area of eyewitness testimony. Many researchers have put a lot of effort on this phenomenon and proposed different explainatioon of it. The original interpretation of the misinformation effect was the memory trace replacement hypothesis. Loftus and her colleagues (1978) argued that the memory trace was replaced or overwritten by the misleading information. According to this explanation, the original memories were formed during the original experiencing and memory traces were created for them. Presentation of the misleading information, such as a yield sign, would create a new memory trace and replaced the original traces ââ¬â the stop sign. In other words, the original traces were updated. Therefore, when the participants were asked to describe the event, they were accessing the updated but mistaken trace containing the misinformation. Overall speaking, the memory trace replacement hypothesis suggested that the misinf ormation effect was dued to memory impairment. Later research provided contranst evidence to this interpreatation. In one of the studies(Chandler, Gargano, Holt, 2001), two stories contained some critical obejcts such as a brand of coffee were preseneted to the paricitpants. Stefanââ¬â¢s Diaries Origins Chapter 24 Free Essays
September 25, 1864 They say love can conquer all. But can it conquer Fatherââ¬â¢s belief that Katherine and those like her are demonsââ¬âdevils? I do not exaggerate when I say Katherine is an angel. She saved my lifeââ¬âand Annaââ¬â¢s. We will write a custom essay sample on Stefanââ¬â¢s Diaries: Origins Chapter 24 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Father must know the truth. Once he does, he will be unable to deny Katherineââ¬â¢s goodness. It is my duty as a Salvatore to stay true to my convictions and to the ones I love. Now is the time for action, not doubt. Confidence courses through my veins. I will make Father understand the truthââ¬âthat we are all the same. And with that truth will come love. Father will call off the siege. This I swear on my name and my life. For the rest of the day, I sat at my desk in my bedroom, glancing at an empty notebook as I contemplated what to do. If Father knew Katherine was a vampire, heââ¬â¢d call off the hunt. He had to. Iââ¬â¢d seen him laugh with Katherine, attempt to impress her with stories of his boyish antics back in Italy, and treat her as heââ¬â¢d have treated a daughter. Katherine gave my father a vigor Iââ¬â¢d never seen in him. She gave my father life. But how could I persuade him of this, when he so deeply despised demons? Then again, Father was rational. Logical. Maybe he could learn what Katherine had already taught me: that vampires werenââ¬â¢t all evil. They walked among us, they cried human tears; all they wanted was a true home ââ¬âand to be loved. Finally, I steeled my courage and stood up, closing the notebook with an abrupt clap. This wasnââ¬â¢t a schoolboyââ¬â¢s assignment, and I didnââ¬â¢t need notes to speak from my heart. I was ready to speak to Father man to man. After all, I was nearly eighteen, and he was planning to leave me Veritas. I took a deep breath and walked down the winding staircase, through the quiet living room, and knocked sharply on the door to Fatherââ¬â¢s study. ââ¬Å"Come in!â⬠Fatherââ¬â¢s muffled voice called. Before I had even put my hand on the knob, Father swung the door open himself. He wore a tailored jacket, with a sprig of vervain in the lapel, but I noticed that instead of being clean shaven, he sported salt-and-pepper stubble and his eyes were bloodshot and hooded. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t see you last night at the ball,â⬠Father said as he ushered me into his study. ââ¬Å"I hope you werenââ¬â¢t part of that noisy, careless mob.â⬠ââ¬Å"No.â⬠I shook my head vigorously, feeling a flicker of hope. Did this mean Father was no longer planning an attack? ââ¬Å"Good.â⬠Father sat at his oak desk and slammed his leather-bound book shut. Beneath it, I could see complicated drawings and diagrams of the town, with Xââ¬â¢s over certain buildings, including the apothecary. And just like that, the flicker of hope was extinguished, and cold, hard fear took up residence in its place. Father followed my gaze. ââ¬Å"As you can see, our plans are much more thought-out than that foolish brigade of drunks and boys. Luckily Sheriff Forbes and his team put a stop to them, and none of them will be welcome at our own siege.â⬠Father sighed and steepled his fingers together. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re living in dangerous and uncertain times, and your actions need to reflect that.â⬠His dark eyes softened for a second. ââ¬Å"I just want to make sure your decisions, at least, are prudent.â⬠He didnââ¬â¢t add ââ¬Å"unlike Damonââ¬â¢s,â⬠but he didnââ¬â¢t have to. I knew that was what he was thinking. ââ¬Å"So the siege â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Will happen next week as planned.â⬠ââ¬Å"What about the compass?â⬠I asked, remembering the conversation with Katherine. Father smiled. ââ¬Å"It works. Jonathanââ¬â¢s been tinkering with it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh.â⬠A wave of horror rushed through me. If it worked, then that meant there was no doubt Father would find Katherine. ââ¬Å"How do you know that it works?â⬠Father smiled and rolled up his papers. ââ¬Å"Because it does,â⬠he said simply. ââ¬Å"Can I talk to you about something?â⬠I asked, hoping my voice betrayed none of my nerves. An image of Katherineââ¬â¢s face flashed in my head, giving me the strength to lock eyes with Father. ââ¬Å"Of course. Sit down, Stefan,â⬠Father commanded. I perched in the leather wingback chair near the bookshelves. He stood up and walked over to the decanter of brandy on the corner table. He poured a glass for himself, then one for me. I took the tumbler and held it to my lips, taking a tiny, almost imperceptible sip of the liquid. Then I steeled my courage and stared straight at him. ââ¬Å"I have concerns about your plan for the vampires.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh? And why is that?â⬠Father leaned back against his chair. I nervously took a large gulp of brandy. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re making the assumption that theyââ¬â¢re as evil as theyââ¬â¢ve been characterized. But what if thatââ¬â¢s not true?â⬠I asked, willing myself to meet Fatherââ¬â¢s gaze. Father snorted. ââ¬Å"Have you any evidence to the contrary?â⬠I shook my head. ââ¬Å"Of course not. But why take what people say at face value? Y taught us ou differently.â⬠Father sighed and walked to his decanter, pouring more brandy. ââ¬Å"Why? Because these creatures are from the darkest parts of hell. They know how to control your mind, seduce your spirit. They are deadly, and they need to be destroyed.â⬠I glanced down at the amber liquid in my glass. It was as dark and murky as my thoughts. Father tipped his glass to me. ââ¬Å"I shouldnââ¬â¢t have to tell you, son, that those who stand with them, those who bring shame to their families, will be destroyed as well.â⬠A chill went up my spine, but I held his gaze. ââ¬Å"Anyone who stands with evil should be destroyed. But I hardly think itââ¬â¢s prudent to assume that all vampires are evil just because they happen to be vampires. Y always taught us to see the good in ou people, to think for ourselves. The last thing this town needs, when there have already been so many deaths from the war, is more senseless killing,â⬠I said, remembering Pearl and Annaââ¬â¢s terrified expressions in the woods. ââ¬Å"The Founders need to rethink the plan. Iââ¬â¢ll come to the next meeting with you. I know I havenââ¬â¢t been as involved as I could have been, but Iââ¬â¢m ready to take on my responsibilities.â⬠Father sank back into his chair, leaning his head against the wooden back. He closed his eyes and massaged his temples. For several long moments he remained in that posture. I waited, every muscle in my body coiled to receive the angry flurry of words that was sure to fly from his mouth. I stared dejectedly into my glass. I had failed. I had failed Katherine, Pearl, and Anna. I had failed at securing my own happy future. Finally, Fatherââ¬â¢s eyes snapped open. To my surprise, he nodded. ââ¬Å"I suppose I could give the matter some thought.â⬠Cool relief flooded my body, as if Iââ¬â¢d just jumped into the pond on a scorching summer day. He would give the matter some thought! To some, that might not seem to be much, but from my stubborn father, it meant everything. It meant there was a chance. A chance to stop sneaking around in the dark. A chance for Katherine to remain safe. For us to be together, forever. Father lifted his glass to me. ââ¬Å"To family.â⬠ââ¬Å"To family,â⬠I echoed. Then Father drained the rest of his glass, which compelled me to do the same. How to cite Stefanââ¬â¢s Diaries: Origins Chapter 24, Essay examples

Miles Davis Essays (629 words) - Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins
Miles Davis Miles Davis, from his beginnings as a nineteen-year-old kid in 1945 New York City, to his final days in the early 1990's, is to be considers one of the jazz's best. The 1996 album entitled, Bluing: Miles Davis Plays the Blues, the engineers at Prestige Records bring Miles Davis back to life. Packed with over 73 minutes and of 12 bar blues, Bluing brings nine great tunes of Davis' together on one disk. Having been originally recorded in the 1950's, these nine cuts take the listener through a decade of music and a decade of Davis' life. On the opening track, entitled "Bluing", we hear nearly ten minutes of Davis on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto sax, Sonny Rollins on tenor, Walter Bishop, Jr. on piano, Tommy Porter on bass, and Art Blakey playing the drums. Bishop provides the intro of the song on the piano, with Blakey coming in soon after. Nearly a minute in, Davis begins and is soon softly accompanied by the saxes. Through the first five or so minutes of the tune, Davis enjoys a solo. He is then followed by the tenor and alto sax, respectively. I enjoy this track mostly for the tone Davis achieves and the moderate tempo. However, during Rollins' tenor solo and then again for the last minute or so of the song, Davis and the rest of the group pick up the pace and begin double-timing. In the end, for me, this track is made classic by a botched ending on the part of Art Blakey. If you listen closely you can hear Davis' instant reaction: "We'll have to play it again then, man. You know the arrangement." Obviously enough, Blakey doesn't contribute to any of the other songs on the album. Another cut that I enjoyed on this album is "Bags' Groove". Originally issued on Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants: Bags' Groove, this song opens with Milt Jackson on vibraharp and also has a great vibraharp solo about three minutes in to the over nine minute tune. Track five has come to be my favorite on the album Bluing. Entitled "Green Haze", this cut consists of Red Garland on piano, Oscar Pettiford on bass, Philly Joe Jones on the drums, and of course Davis with his trumpet. Garland provides a great opening on the piano. Davis comes in a little over a minute in to the tune and sets a very subdued mood with his warm, mellow tone and a slower tempo. Later on in the song the group picks it up a bit and begins playing double-time, only to slow it back down for a great bass solo by Pettiford. The entire song is background by the Jones' stirring of a brush on his snare. This gives the tune a very softened feel. It is this melodious and softened feel that makes me enjoy the tune so much. Before listening to this album I had the idea in my mind that all blues was slow in tempo and portrayed a mood of depression or sadness. After listening to these nine songs I see that blues can be at any tempo at all, and can also create moods other than sadness. The second song on the album, "Blue ?N' Boogie" is very up-tempo and actually makes me wish I knew how to dance jazz. I was surprised to find that I liked the faster songs on the album because in the past, though I have been involved in playing music for many years, I've always enjoyed the slower songs. Now on the other hand, I find myself wanting to start playing again so I can have a chance to play some of these faster tunes that I have passed on in the past. As for Miles Davis' Bluing, I would recommend it to anyone wanting to hear some really good jazz. Prestige Records did a great job of choosing nine of Davis' blues tunes to compile onto one disk.
